One photo, every day!  This was such an interesting exercise.  It’s one thing to point a click when I see something I like and want to record, but the challenge came in focusing on a specific theme every day.

Like “Swarm”.

When I read the assignment, the first thing that came to mind was, of course, bees…..or atleast some insects.  But this is November and all those guys are tucked away.  I certainly did not expect to find a “swarm” in an art gallery exhibit.  But, voila!  There it was.

And that is what I have taken from this workshop.  It’s all about keeping my eyes (and my mind) OPEN. 🙂

I’ve gathered a few of my favourite photos here, taken this month.  But I am very happy to report that I did manage to rise to the challenge every day….even the weekends. It was fun!

Triumph

Not only does this surfer get “up” on his board, he does it on his head! As you can see, there was very little surf on this particular morning…..the other surfers are just floating around. I was impressed! Another small triumph here is that I had the presence of mind to catch get this shot. ;). Sun, waves, surfers……sigh.
I took this photo last February, on the beautiful island of Barbados.

Over the Edge

I took this photo in Toronto several weeks ago. Since I have a fear of heights, watching this window cleaner slide over the edge of the building was absolutely terrifying.

Landscape – The easiest assignment, I thought; just point and shoot. Right? But that’s not how it played out. I started taking photos early this morning. But each time I looked again, the change in light had completely altered the scene. (Reference last weekend’s assignment) I’ve finally settled on this latest shot, taken in the late afternoon. I love this golden afternoon light! And how nice for those lovely clouds to show up as if on cue. I didn’t need to crop at all, but I did focus on keeping that horizon level.

This hauntingly beautiful piece is part of the Northern Exposure group exhibit at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. Tania Kitchell’s installation “Occupy” is made up of a series of sculptures that represent invasive plant species in the arctic. They are made of ABS plastic on a 3-D printer.

I really wasn’t expecting to find a subject that would satisfy the theme “swarm” when I dropped into the AGNS, but then, this! The physical installation coupled with idea of invasive species swarming the fragile arctic struck a cord with me.

As a painter, I like to think that I am always looking about my world with an appreciative eye. Today’s find has shown me that when I have a particular theme in mind, that theme can be found in the most unexpected places. It’s a really interesting exercise.
